Hoa Lu, Ninh Binh

Hoa Lu Ancient Temple

The old capital of Vietnam back in 1000 years ago.

Located up to the north of Ninh Binh city, Hoa Lu was the capital of Vietnam during the 11th century. Despite being the heart of the country for only 42 years, the area was still home to 3 dynasties: Dinh (968–980), Pre-Le (980–1009), and Early Ly (1009–1010).

In 1010, King Ly Thai To decided to move his capital to Thang Long (now Ha Noi), and Hoa Lu officially became the ancient capital of Vietnam with many preserved historic temples and relic locations.

Having undergone the Vietnam War as well as multiple renovations over the centuries, the Ancient Capital of Hoa Lu now remains with only two famous temples, dedicated to King Dinh and King Le.

Visiting the Ancient Capital of Hoa Lu not only broadens your knowledge of Vietnam history, but also gives you a chance to participate in the famous Truong Yen Festival.

King Dinh & King Le Temples

Dinh Temple and Le Temple are a few remnants of the magnificent ancient capital. Built in the 17th century, both temples honor the two kings who once ruled the area: Dinh and Le.

Built on the ground of the destroyed citadel, Dinh Temple was constructed in the “nội công ngoại quốc” style. It means the inner buildings are placed in the shape of the Chinese character “gong” (工) while the outers are arranged in the shape of a square like the Chinese character “guo” (国). The most distinctive feature of King Dinh temple, however, is two 300-year-old Dragon beds, “Long Sang“, each adorned with unique dragon decorations, showing the talents of ancient artisans. The front of the temple stands Ma Yen Mountain while Du Mountain covers its back, playing a role in defending the sanctuary from the dark spirits.

Lied 500 meters from Dinh to the right is Le Temple. It’s a bit smaller in size but shares the same architectural style. Le temple consists of three buildings: the front shrine, Thien Huong House, and the Sanctu, each paying tribute to Le Dai Hanh and his family members.

Nhat Tru Pagoda

Nhat Tru (One Pillar) Pagoda is located 200 meters away from the 2 temples. Built in the 10th century, the pagoda house “Cột kinh Phật” – A giant stone pillar that stands on the ground with an octagonal shape. On the eight faces of this National Treasure are inscribed Buddhist sutras and verses, expressing a desire for national peace, stability, and the belief in the miraculous power of Buddhism.

Attending this old festival, you can experience traditional rituals such as: Fire procession (from King Dinh Temple to Ma Yen mountain peak); Water procession (from Hoang Long River to King Dinh Temple); etc.

Besides, you’re also able to take part in many interesting folk games, such as Dragon dancing, cooking competitions, etc.
